Apr 13, 2012 - 4 months and 18 days ago I would never have imagined I'd be here speaking to you today

The following is the speech given by Sheri at the 2nd annual MADD/SADD spin event held at the Ecole Secondaire Beaumont Composite High School.

The speech was given during the candlelight vigil held to honour families and friends in the community who have lost loved ones to drinking and driving.

Hi, I am Sheri Arsenault.

As many of you know, my son Brad along with his lifelong friend Kole and his very good friend Thaddeus were killed by Jonathan Robert Pratt, a drunk driver, November 26 2011.

I speak for the families of these 3 young men and would like to tell you that we are pleased that as supporters of this year’s fundraiser, your funds will be dedicated to MADD and SADD.

It is my hope that through the efforts of these two organizations, awareness about drinking and driving and the laws that govern this serious crime will be continually scrutinized so that tragedies of this nature will be prevented.

It is also our hope that the laws will change in order to swiftly and severely deal with the perpetrators of these crimes not only to initiate closure for the families and friends of the victims but to intensify the public message on the seriousness of drinking and driving.

This crime of choice is completely avoidable and it’s all so senseless.  This decision kills innocent people and completely devastates families.

There absolutely needs to be changes to the laws and the sentencing must be more severe in order to defer individuals from drinking and then driving.

My wish is that politician’s would take this matter more seriously and strive for stricter laws!

4 months and 18 days ago I would never have imagined that I would have lost my son Bradley, or to be here speaking to you today.  The deaths of these 3 boys has not only changed our lives forever, but has also impacted this Community.

Please let us never forget the state of realization and comprehension that we all reached on the horrific outcome that occurred by the decision made by Pratt, and all other outcomes from drinking and driving.

Let us lead by example and continue to teach our children to make good decisions, to be responsible, and to be accountable for their actions.

I miss my son Bradley terribly. There are no words that can ever describe the emptiness and pain in my heart.  But let us look forward to future changes so there will be no more victims of this senseless crime that I call “Murder by Choice”

I wish to thank you, all the participants and volunteers for the time you have committed to this fundraiser.

The Arsenault, Novak and Lake Families are hugely appreciative to you, the community of Beaumont, for showing your support in this endeavor.

Thank you
