Man, 26, charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident

Halifax Regional Police are praising an eye witness who spotted an alleged impaired driver and followed him until help arrived.

The incident happened Tuesday, around 5:20 p.m.

Police say the caller saw a man, who the caller believed was impaired, leave a restaurant and get behind the wheel.

The witness then followed the suspect, and saw the driver get into a collision on Woodland Avenue near Ryland Avenue.

Police say the driver abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene, but the witness kept an eye on him. A suspect was arrested.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

"The citizen involved in this matter did a great service for his community by alerting and then assisting police in the apprehension of this impaired driver. A job well done!" said HRP Staff Sgt. Lindsay Hernden in a news release.
