Nov 13, 2014 - MP PRESENTS IMPAIRED DRIVING PETITIONS

A local MP is pushing for two petitions he is saying are important to his constituents.

Vegreville-Wainwright MP Leon Benoit, whose riding encompasses a portion of the Fort, presented two petitions in the House of Commons on Oct. 28.

Both petitions deal with impaired driving, and the call for harsher sentencing for offenders.

“Petitioners call for new mandatory minimum sentencing for those persons convicted of impaired driving causing death,” he said in his speech to the throne during the House of Commons assembly.

“They also want the Criminal Code of Canada to be changed to redefine the offence of impaired driving causing death as vehicular manslaughter.”

At the same sitting, Benoit presented a petition countering sex-selective abortion — the second position of its kind he’s brought forward in Parliament
