Apr 01, 2012 - RED DEER MAN DIES AS CAR HITS DISABLED VEHICLE - (Tyson & Colton case)

A young man is dead and his 17-year-old friend seriously injured after they were hit by a suspected drunk driver while pushing a broken down car on a rural highway.

Blackfalds RCMP say the collision happened at 3: 33 a.m. on Hwy 11A about eight kilometres west of Hwy 2. They were driving together but encountered car problems.

"The vehicle had become disabled and they were pushing it," said RCMP Staff Sgt. Gord Glasgow.

The pair were outside of the vehicle when it was hit by an eastbound Ford Focus.

The lone occupant of the car, a 29-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

When emergency crews arrived at the crash scene, a 19-year-old was pronounced dead and the 17-year-old taken to hospital in Edmonton by STARS. The young men are from Red Deer.

Colton Keeler, 19, was confirmed as the teenager who died, according to his uncle Dale Keeler, who described his nephew as a regular teenager, who enjoyed hanging out and playing video games.

"He was just a good kid," Dale said. "Quiet, a little bit shy but he was very friendly. He was a very likable guy."

A recent high school graduate, Colton had "mixed plans" about his future but was planning on heading back to school, according to Dale.

The family, which includes Colton's two younger brothers, is trying their best in a traumatic situation, he said.

"It's only Day 1 of a lot of bad days to come here in the next week or so," Dale said.

He added that Colton's father encountered the woman from the other car on Sunday at the hospital, but made it clear the father doesn't "hate" her.

"He's upset for what happened," because of the allegation it involved an intoxicated driver, Dale said about his brother.

"You always have the idea that it's never going to happen to you until finally it does."

The woman is in police custody for questioning.

Glasgow said police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and charges against the 29-year-old Lacombe woman are pending.
