WATCH ABOVE: Edmonton has one of the highest rates of impaired driving in Canada. As Kent Morrison reports, this winter some young students are doing what they can again to implore drivers not to get behind the wheel when they're intoxicated.


Statistics Canada has released impaired driving numbers for 2015 and Edmonton has placed among the most incidents for a city across the country.

The new report shows Edmonton is seventh on the list when it comes to police-reported impaired driving incidents out of all census metropolitan areas last year.

Alberta’s capital had 226 incidents per 100,000 population.

St. John’s, Newfoundland had the most incidents with 411 per 100,000 population.

Kelowna, Regina, Victoria, Moncton, and Saskatoon round out the top six.

Calgary was 20 on the list with 132 incidents per 100,000 population.

Alberta had the second highest rate among provinces at 314 incidents per 100,000 population. Saskatchewan had the most in the country with nearly twice as many as Alberta at 575 incidents per 100,000 population.

Ontario had the lowest rates in the country.

The Statistics Canada report shows he average rate across Canada was 201 incidents per 100,000 population.

The impaired driving rate in 2015 was 65 per cent lower than the rate in 1986 and four per cent lower than the rate in 2014.
