Jan 15, 2013 - THE SELFISH ATTITUDES OF ALBERTA'S IMPAIRED IDIOTS

From the title of this editorial, you may think we are calling everyone in Alberta idiots. Well, this is not the case.

Alberta is full of wonderful, nice people. However, it also has its share of idiots who think that they can drink and drive.

Sorry, but it is true and as long as Alberta is one of the worst provinces for drunk driving, the idiots will make us look bad.

A recent report from Stats Canada stated that Alberta is the third-worst province in Canada for impaired driving, ranking only behind Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island. According to that same report, the average rate of impaired driving charges is 262 per 100,000 in Canada. What is Alberta’s average? I hefty 450 charges per 100,000!

There is no excuse for this. If you are one of those charged with impaired driving, then congratulations, you are an idiot who doesn’t get the message.

Quebec and Ontario have the honour of having the lowest impaired driving incidents out of the provinces, something Alberta should really aspire to be.

Perhaps the new laws will impact the drunk driving rates more, but it could be some time before we see that.

There is no excuse for being an idiot.

What else can the government do to educate drivers that drinking and driving is wrong and dangerous?

Fine, many people don’t think that speeding is a big deal, but impaired driving is in a class of its own.

When you are impaired, your reflexes are impaired, your cognitive abilities are impaired and your driving becomes dangerous to everyone on the road.

It is highly doubtful that RCMP officers enjoy going to the homes of victims who have been killed by an impaired driver and telling a family that their mother, father, son, daughter, sister, or brother will not be coming home.

RCMP officers join the force to make a difference, not to bring bad news to families because of someone else’s idiotic choices.

Perhaps that is a good way to stop impaired driving. If you kill someone, you can be the one to deliver the news to the family.

You can look into their eyes as they realize they will never see their loved one again because of you stupidity.

It is great that Alberta has stronger impaired driving laws but maybe they need to be stronger.

Impaired driving is like smoking while you are pregnant. We all know that it is bad for everyone involved, it is socially-accepted as something that you shouldn’t do and we frown on anyone who does it.

While smoking when you are pregnant has mostly disappeared (we hope), impaired driving is increasing in Alberta.

Why?

What is the mentality behind this? Do you think you are invincible and nothing can happen to you? Or are you one of those idiots that thinks they drive better when drunk because they ‘focus on the road more’.

Well, we have news for you. You don’t drive better when you are drunk and you are a bigger idiot than the rest for thinking it.

Stop drinking and driving before you kill someone and ruin a family’s life and your own life
