Jun 06, 2013 - YVAN GRANDMAISON SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS IN JAIL FOR RUNNING OVER MONTREAL COUPLE (Quebec case)

Yvan Grandmaison, a repeat drunk driver who ran into a couple in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, killing one and seriously injuring the other, faced a judge for sentencing on Thursday.

Judge Marie-Josee Di Lallo sentenced Grandmaison to six years in prison minus time served for impaired driving causing death and injury.

As part of his sentence, 42-year-old Grandmaison can’t drive a car for five years.

In February 2012, Grandmaison hit 73-year-old Ngnan Wong Lee and 72-year-old Poon Huy Shuy while they were walking in their Montreal neighbourhood.

Wong lee was killed and her husband is still in hospital a year after the accident.

Grandmaison had a cocktail of alcohol, cocaine and sleeping pills in his system at the time of the accident.

Wong’s nephew, Ronald Wong calls the sentence “too short and way too low”.

Crown prosecutor Dennis Galiatsatos had asked for a nine year sentence.

Galiatsatos told reporters Thursday that he’s disappointed, but hopes the sentence will send a dissuasive message to the public. With time served, Grandmaison will be out of prison in four and a half years.
