Jun 16, 2013 - CRUZE FOR JR (BRANDON THOMAS) EVENT - OPEN LETTER TO THE MEDIA

TO ALL MEDIA:

My name is Markita Kaulius and I am the founder of the Families For Justice Society. I wish to advise everyone of an upcoming event called Cruze For JR. happening from July 2 to July 9, 2013. This event is being organized by a group of young people who lost their 17 year old best friend, Brandon Thomas, to an alleged impaired driver in Cochrane, Alberta. Brandon's dream was to come to BC after graduating from High School in June. Sadly he never got that chance as his life ended tragically on December 6th, 2012.

To honor Brandon, Ben Carew and a group of 25 friends have organized this event called "Cruze For JR". They will be travelling from Cochrane, AB to Revelstoke, Kelowna, Merritt, Chilliwack, Surrey, and Penticton, B.C. They will be stopping in each community bringing awareness to impaired driving and collecting signatures on the Families For Justice Petition that is asking the Federal Government for tougher sentencing for anyone convicted of impaired driving causing death.

Cruze for JR is an event where young people are taking a stand and speaking up to say it is not ok to drive while impaired. These 25 young people will be presenting the signatures that they collect to the Kaulius Family as we also lost our 22 year old daughter Kassandra Kaulius on May 3, 2011 to an impaired driver.

We hope that the media will be able to assist us by doing a story on this event as we know impaired driving happens in every community and affects thousands of people in Canada each day. As summer approaches we all know that there will be grads, weddings, summer parties, BBQ's and social get-togethers where drinking may take place.

We want to implore people to have a plan in place before they take their first drink. Everyone deserves the right to get home safely to their family and friends. We ask that people "Think before you drink".

The alleged impaired driver not only changed the life of Brandon Thomas and his family. Many, many, others are affected or put at risk when someone chooses to drink and then drive while impaired.

We will be letting each community know when the event will be happening in their area and invite the media to attend on the scheduled date of the event.

Thank you for considering our request and we look forward to having you attend this event. We appreciate your support in bringing awareness and education to the impact of impaired driving.
