Families for Justice will have a petition table set up today at the Magnificent River Rats Festival in Athabasca, Alberta.

The Magnificent River Rats Festival began on a shoestring budget and featured one of Alberta’s country music favorites, Danny Hooper in 1996. Organizers actually passed around a collection plate during the concert. But once the dust settled, the very first Magnificent River Rats Festival paid its bills and an annual summer event was born. The 1997 installment brought popular country music recording artist Patricia Conroy. In 1998, event organizers brought Alberta’s very own Duane Steele for an energized, foot stompin’ performance.

In 1999, the Magnificent River Rats invited the Juno Award winning band Prairie Oyster to headline the festival. By this time, the event swelled to about 7000 attendees. The Magnificent River Rats Festival was on the map as a major summer event.

In 2003, the Magnificent River Rats Festival added a new dimension with a day dedicated to classic rock and roll, headlined by the legendary Randy Bachman. Other headliners included Michelle Wright and Rick Tippe. The festival also hosted a rare visit by the R.C.M. P. Musical Ride.
In 2004, the Magnificent River Rats Festival welcomed Kim Mitchell, Aaron Lines and Gil Grand as headline acts.

As the years continued, many popular Canadian Acts have graced the river front stage. Artists such as Trooper, Harlequin, and The Headpins have been featured. Last year, Valdy and Bif Naked provided entertaining performances for this festival.

The festival continues to evolve. The current line-up is sure to appeal to a wide range of musical tastes. There is something for everyone.

Platinum selling recording artist, Victoria Duffield will please fans of all ages when she performs songs from her Juno nominated album, “Shut up and Dance.” In addition, fans of 90’s music will appreciate the inclusion of The Odds who continue to entertain with their alternative rock sound. Julian Austin is a favorite of many country music fans.

The Athabasca riverfront is the place to be on the Canada Day weekend! Come celebrate our birthday by enjoying Canadian music and culture.
