Nov 10, 2012 - DRINK. DRIVE. GO TO JAIL? - AN ESSAY BY GRADE 12 STUDENT CHELSEA GOULET

Introduction:

My name is Chelsea Bianca Goulet, and I attend Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School. I'm in an English ten honors class, and we were assigned a research project.

Two years ago, I lost a classmate to a drunk driver. That drunk driver killed a thirteen year old boy, seriously injured his older brother and left his sister to blame herself.

Last summer, I lost one of my best friends, who was 17 when he passed, to a drunk driver. He fought for a year to over-come his injuries, and his injuries only reminded him that the person who caused them took two of his brother’s lives.

I watched his youngest brother suffer through depression from the loss of three brothers because of one person's decision to drink and drive. It honestly broke my heart to watch my friend go through that.

So for the project, I didn't want to write something that was meaningless, I wanted to write about something that has impact on people every day. I wanted to write about something that I was passionate about.

Add that to the fact that I want to study criminology and behavior in humans when I'm older, this project gave me a much broader view on impaired driving and I learned so much.

I think that in itself is an award and I hope that maybe it'll give other people that same knowledge as well.
