May 28, 2013 - LETTER TO CONSTITUENTS BY JAMES RAJOTTE, MP FOR EDMONTON-LEDUC

Dear Constituents:

As many of you are aware, on Sunday, May 19th, two-year-old Geo Mounsef met his untimely death. This is a terrible, heartbreaking tragedy for his family, and I appreciate your support for them.

In the past year, I have met with constituents from our community who are family members that have lost loved ones to impaired drivers, and have been pushing to have changes made to the Criminal Code of Canada to ensure that the punishment of the sentence fits the severity of the crime.

In October 2012, I raised this issue directly with the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Honourable Rob Nicholson.

Since that time, I have presented petitions in the House of Commons signed by hundreds of Canadians that stated:

We the undersigned citizens of Canada acknowledge that the current impaired driving laws are too lenient. In the interest of public safety we as Citizens of Canada want to see tougher laws and the implementation of new mandatory minimum sentencing for those persons convicted of impaired driving causing death. We also want the Criminal Code of Canada to be changed to redefine the offence of impaired driving causing death as Vehicular Manslaughter.

I would also encourage you to write to Minister Nicholson directly to express your concern about impaired driving laws and sentences and the need to make them stronger. Please send me a copy of your letter as well. Minister Nicholson’s mailing address is as follows:
